Mahabalipuram is one of South India's most popular beach resorts. Situated 58 km from Chennai, it is just an hour's drive on the East Coast Road with long stretches of unspoilt beaches and casuarina groves. There are many interesting eating places en route for a leisurely beachside meal. Mahabalipuram is a delightful mix of sun, surf and sand at the beachside. Sea bathing is not allowed because the rough waters here can be dangerous. But the beach itself with its majestic shore temple is a lovely sight to behold.
