The celebration of life depicted in the carvings of the Khajuraho temples required an even bigger celebration with the turn of the century when the temples completed 1000 years of existence. At the initiation of Mr. Kanti Poddar, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh had declared March 1999 to March 2000 as the “Khajuraho Millennium” year. The people, who visited Khajuraho in this time, remember it as a unique experience of lifetime.
Involving various disciplines, the main objective of this year-long event was to make the heritage of Khajuraho relevant to the present generation and preserve it for the future ones. Well known artists, dancers, theatre and craft organizations collectively worked towards a cultural revival of the Khajuraho area by the way of research, documentation and composition of new repertoires. Each discipline was asked to develop a program around the theme of “Khajuraho” and were allotted dates in the calendar of events to showcase their work.
This event bought alive the rich legacy of India’s ancient civilization along with bringing about major changes in the general infrastructure of the entire region.
